מקור השם
שמה של צורת גידול זו נגזר, כנראה, משמו של בעל, אל הגשמים, הסערות, הברקים והרעמים הכנעני. החקלאים הקדמונים האמינו שהגשמים, ומכאן השדות, תלויים בהיענות האל בעל לתפילותיהם.
